Students wrote a timed (45 minute) FRQ on Huck Finn today. We spent the first part of the period going over writing organization, TEXT paragraphs, and how to use your time when writing an FRQ. Students spent the remainder of the class writing the FRQ. No books. If you were absent, see me ASAP to make this up. They are being graded by the English Department Grader, so we need to get them to her in a timely manner. Homework: Just bring your Huck Finn book tomorrow. We are swapping it out for My Antonia.

1. A bulleted list of 10 relevant and interesting facts (MLA Title and Heading)
2. A list of sources in MLA Format--use Easybib or another website to format correctly
3. Three multiple choice quiz questions with answers. These are for me to create a test. You do not need to copy them for everyone.
Staple the above three things together. Then be ready to present when you're number is called. Remember you have 5=7 minutes. Good luck, I'm looking forward to your creativity and insights!

Student pictures were handed out. Notes from the Mark Twain Biography were collected. If students were absent for the Mark Twain video, then they should research 25 facts about Mark Twain and turn them in. We had a discussion about Dialect and how it relates to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. If you are having a difficult time reading or understanding the dialect, then try reading aloud or try listening to an audio book version. There are several free versions on YouTube and elsewhere online. We then read the first chapter of the novel together as a class. Bookmarks with the Reading Schedule were handed out.(Chapters 1-10 should be read by Monday 9/16. Expect a quiz.) See me to get one of these. Then we watched and discussed a clip from "Sixty Minutes" titled "The N=Word." Homework: Narrative due tomorrow--Thursday. Be sure it is proper MLA style and no more than 500 words.

Announcements: Students may read Scarlet Letter for up to 40 Enrichment Points. The test will be ready on September 16th. You may take it anytime between 9/16 and 10/8. Mr. Birrell and I decided today that we will also offer The Autobiography of Frederick Douglass for Enrichment Points as well. You may do both assignments if you wish, but the limit of total points earned will be 40 for the term. I handed out Literary Terms for Term 1. These are accessible on either website. See the file to the left. The class spent a little time defining their assigned word, finding an example in the novel Speak, and teaching other students that word. The rest of these terms will be defined on your own time. The final test for the term is Friday, October 11th. In Speak, there are many ALLUSIONS to famous people, events, places, and son on. One of these was Maya Angelou. We watched a short Biography on Maya Angelou and then explicated the poem "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." We discussed how this related to Speak. I can give you a copy of the poem in class. Homework: Narrative on "RISK." 500 word maximum. Assignment is attached below, along with the MLA BASIC Handout for proper form, heading, title, and margins. This is due on Thursday, September 12th. Mrs. King needs a printed copy. |
